Silviahemmet is a non profit foundation devoted to improving the quality of life for persons affected by dementia and their families. The foundation was inaugurated by H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden on Valentines Day in 1996. The Silviahemmet care philosophy aims at highest quality of life for the person affected by dementia and the family. The cornerstones in the philosophy, outgoing from palliative care philosophy are; personcentered care/symtomcontrol, familysupport, teamwork, communication and relation.
Silviahemmet also runs a daycare center at Drottningholm (Stockholm, Sweden), for elderly as well as young persons affected by dementia. The foundation continues to educate assistant nurses and nurses in cooperation with Sophiahemmet University. This year there will be 550 assistant nurses who have received the title Silviasister and 190 nurses with the title Silvianurse. In cooperation with the Karolinska Institutet the international and swedish Master Course in Dementia Care for Physicians have 25 students this year. The first six Silvia Doctors received their title from H.M. Queen Silvia in 2015.
Another six Silvia Doctors will receive their title on 17 May 2016. The solemn Diploma Ceremony will take place at Aula Medica, Solna, when Silviahemmet celebrate its 20th Anniversary-

Silviahemmet also provides non academic educationprograms for example education for familycarers as well as other professionals in the health care and social care sector. The foundation certifies the education level for nursinghome units as well as hospital wards. Today 34 units are certified by Silviahemmet and more units are in process.
Silviahemmet has also co-founded the Swedish Dementia Center, www.demenscentrum.se, the national competence center for dementia.
Since 2006 the foundation provides educations to other countries by Swedish Care International (SCI). Education programs from Silviahemmet are available in Japan, Germany, China, the Netherlands and in Great Britain. Swedish Care International, www.sci.se, also arranges studyvisits at Silviahemmet Daycare Center at Drottningholm.
